JULY

WEDNESDAY, July 1 – Our neighbor Nubia got the intern job. Since she’s not an exploitable college student, they’re paying her a bit more money than Montel got last year. She may work out as another source of info on Almy–assuming I wish to continue torturing myself over that girl. Too bad I detect few signs of that trend abating.

Dad got a gig at The Normandie. He’s pissed that it’s only for a week and only in the lounge. Treez isn’t happy he insists on working during a pandemic, but she’ll be there as his sexy assistant. They’re dragging the kids along too. The four of them are driving there tomorrow. Believe it or not, they’re borrowing Trent Preston’s motorhome so they don’t have to use public restrooms along the way. I expect they’ll be handing it back to Trent with some funky matter in its tanks. They may have to handcuff Teejay to his car seat so he doesn’t wreck its fancy interior. Has Dad ever driven such a large beast of a vehicle? He says he’s not worried.

I’m jealous they get to escape confinement to go to exciting, fun-filled Vegas. Will there be any gamblers for them to entertain? Dad is hoping at least a few brave, non-infectious ones turn up for his act. In his younger days he attracted enthusiastic hordes every night. Meanwhile, Uncle Jake is working up some topical COVID-19 jokes for Dad to sprinkle in his comic patter. (Not an assignment I’d want.)

Cooper phoned from Manhattan Beach. He said Jackie has peed on the stick and is officially pregnant.

“That’s nice,” I said. “I think she’ll make a good mom.”

“I hope I don’t trip over it and injure it. I think it will be a trial having a baby and not being able to see it.”

“You’ll do fine, Cooper. Plus, you’ll have a nanny to do all the heavy lifting and wiping. You have a great excuse for never changing a single diaper. It’s every dad’s dream.”

“I won’t be able to play catch with it if it’s a boy.”

“I never did that with either of my dads and I turned out semi-OK.”

“Would you say your stepbrother is as good-looking as Otto Jager?”

“Uh, probably not quite. Montel, however, does seem to appeal to the ladies, not that that does them much good. Why do you ask?”

“I have to compete against that sexy singsong accent of his. Plus, I can tell he’s doing other business to upstage me.”

“Don’t worry, Cooper. As I said before, when you’re in a scene, all eyes are on the blind guy. You have the ultimate weapon for commanding attention. That’s why you’re the star of our show.”

“Thanks, Nick. I’m sorry Almy has wiped you from her life. No one is allowed to mention your name around her.”

“I’m coping, Cooper. Some people just feel a need to be vindictive when things don’t work out the way they expect.”

Luco left me with a list of groceries to buy. When I was paying at our
